Mission

The Young Leaders in Diabetes (YLD) programme is the key driver in enhancing the lives of young people living with diabetes. The Young Leaders are committed to raising awareness of diabetes by being a powerful voice for prevention, education, access to quality care, improved quality of life, and the end of discrimination worldwide. The Young leaders in Diabetes regional programme helps the Young Leaders build up leadership and prepare them for the unique nature of diabetes in Western Pacific region.

Theme

Diabetes-centered medical innovation

Diabetes is a chronic disease that patients rely on continuous treatment to keep their life in balance. Therefore, a medical device or survice that is specific to diabetes will greatly enhance the quality of life for all diabetic patients. With this in mind, the programme cooperate with H.I.T. Taiwan to hold the first diabetes-oriented healthcare hackathon. For more information, please visit Diabetes Hackathon.

Diabetes-related disaster mitigation

Western pacific region is frequently struck by nature disasters. The earthquakes and tsunamis in south asia and Japan as well as local instability are threatening the medical access for diabetic patients in affected regions. In the face of disasters we, as a young leader in diabetes, should stand firm and take actions to reduce loss of medical supply and life of people in our community. Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices, and invest in long-term community well-being. Without mitigation actions, we jeopardize our safety, financial security and self-reliance.

Unity and cooperation

Western pacific region represents the biggest population in the world. However, lack of patient engagement and awareness lead to frequent under-reprsentation of the region in the international diabetic society. By gathering the young leaders together, we look forward to mutual understanding, experience-sharing and discussion to foster future cooperation as a united family of diabetes.
